Accutane:
The year 1982 saw the approval and widespread welcome of a new drug that was to be used for severe nodular acne, a serious acne condition for which no other treatment was available at that time. The drug, called Accutane and manufactured by Hoffman-La Roche Inc. was approved by the Food and Drugs Administration, and was soon being widely prescribed to sufferers of this particular type of acne. In some cases it was also prescribed to patients that had a far less serious form of acne. The possible effects of Accutane really hit the headlines after the son of a US Rep shot himself at the age of seventeen. It was thought that the boy’s suicide was connected to the medication he was taking – Accutane.
