There are two very common types of conditions that result because of some form of birth injury. One of the more well known is cerebral palsy with the other form of birth injury being Erbs Palsy. This type of palsy usually comes as result of some complication experience during the childbirth itself. There are some instances when this disorder occurred after the birth of a child but these instances are rare.
Erbs Palsy is also known as Brachial Palsy. This form of birth injury occurs in about two out of every 1,000 deliveries. This disorder comes as a result of some form of damage or injury to the brachial plexus. The brachial plexus is a group of nerves that travels from the spinal cord into the arms and hands. The leading cause of this disorder is from excessive pressure being applied to the head of the child during the actual childbirth. This usually happens when there is difficulty delivering the shoulder area of the child. Therefore pressure needs to be applied the head and shoulder area of the child. Children who are higher-than-average weight are more susceptible to this type of birth injury.
During delivery, a doctor may need to use forceps or vacuum devices in order to deliver the baby. If the doctor is not extremely careful, some stretching of the brachial plexus may occur and important nerves may be torn or ruptured. As a result, the child suffers brain damage and Erbs Palsy results. Symptoms of Erbs Palsy take on many forms, including paralysis or limpness in the baby’s arm. The baby may experience limited movement in his or her hands and fingers. Children have also been known to experience loss of sensation in the hands and fingers.
Often the parents of children who suffer from Erbs Palsy feel as if they have no one to turn to for help. This is not the case at all. Due to the increasing number of cases of Erbs Palsy being reported in the United States and Canada today, there are a number of parents who have taken it upon themselves to create support groups. These Erbs Palsy support groups come in many types. The most common form of support group can be found online. Parents can sign up for a membership and they can talk to other parents who are going through the same things as they are with the child. This is great place to ask questions and find out helpful information. It is also a great place to go just to talk to someone who is going through or has gone through the same thing you are. There are also a number of societies or groups that have been formed in support of parents of children with Erbs Palsy. These societies, groups and associations have been formed to provide support for, promote public awareness, and to serve as a resource for families.
For those parents who are not familiar with Erbs Palsy there are hundreds of websites they can visit to find information about the disorder. These websites offer useful information about the conditions –the possible causes, symptoms and the treatments available. Since this is a birth injury, there are some mothers who blame themselves for what their child is going through, so the website can help to alleviate some of their feelings of guilt. It is clear that this does not happen because the parent has made any mistake. As stated before, this disorder mostly occurs during the childbirth process itself. There are some instances when Erbs Palsy is identified while the child is in the womb, but unless the parents request it or the physician suspects anything there is little chance that it will be identified.
