Settlement Reached By Super Steel Inc. Over Racism Lawsuit
Super Steel Inc. has reached a settlement following a lawsuit filed by nine employees over alleged discrimination and racism in the workplace. The nine African-American employees filed the lawsuit earlier this year, claiming that they had been discriminated against and had suffered racist threats from white workers and superiors.The settlement of one and a quarter million dollars has been filed in an Albany Court, and will be used to pay two of the former employees a quarter of a million dollars each and the other seven former employees between twenty five and seventy five thousand dollars each. Some of the funds will go towards compensating other employees that may come forward with complaints, as well as paying legal and attorney fees.
In addition to the settlement, Super Steel Inc. has also agreed to ensure that supervisors and senior staff at the company will be provided with training on anti-discrimination policies. The settlement that has been filed is in relation to the company’s Glenville plant.
It is also claimed that the company fired eight white employees earlier this year in relation to the violation of anti-discrimination policies, but the fired employees claimed that they were used as scapegoats.
