Newspaper Barred From Publishing Details Of Synthetic Blood Project
A newspaper has been barred from publishing details about the testing of a synthetic blood substitute by a Superior Court judge. The information was obtained under the California Public Records Act, but the judge stated that publication of the information could affect the trade secrets of the drug maker.The project is at the Northfield Laboratories Inc. of Evanston, and the judge, Superior Court Judge Joan M. Lewis, has issued a temporary order that stops the San Diego Reader from publishing any details about the testing of the synthetic blood substitute.
A spokesperson from the laboratory stated that the drug maker and the newspaper hope to come to some sort of agreement and that a meeting is planned in the very near future to discuss the matter further. She stated: "We are hopeful that the two sides can reach an amicable agreement."
The newspaper and its publisher were sued by the laboratory in a bid to halt publication of the project details. The red blood cell substitute, known as Polyheme, is still undergoing clinical trials nationwide, and the drug maker stated that publication of the information could compromise sensitive information.
