Wal-Mart Class Action Suit Approved By Judge
A class action lawsuit filed by Pennsylvania employees of retail giant Wal-mart has been approved by a judge. The suit alleges that the employees were made to work over and above their scheduled hours according to the lawsuit. This latest suit is one of a number of legal actions taken against the company for the same reasons.Wal-mart workers in California were recently awarded over $170 million as part of a settlement for a lawsuit that alleged that the employees were denied lunch breaks. Another case was settled in Colorado to the sum of $50 million. One of the plaintiffs on this latest case stated that she had to work, on average, eight to twelve hours each month without pay in order to keep up with the workload.
Part of the suit reads: "One of Wal-Mart's undisclosed secrets for its profitability is its creation and implementation of a system that encourages off-the-clock work for its hourly employees…"
Wal-mart officials have denied the allegations in the suit, which was approved for class certification last month. A spokesperson stated: "We strongly deny the allegations in this lawsuit. Wal-Mart's policy is to pay associates for every minute they work."
