Sex Discrimination Lawsuit Filed By EEOC
The Equal Employment Opportunities Commission in the US has filed a lawsuit alleging sex discrimination against Oppenheimer & Co. Inc. The suit has been filed in federal court in Manhattan. The lawsuit alleges that the company has been practicing discrimination when hiring. Previously known as Fahnestock & Co. Inc., the company has been accused of refusing an interview to a job applicant based on her sex.The discrimination came to light when it was discovered that the female applicant along with other female applicants were told that the position of trainee broker at the company had been filled. However, when male applicants known to the female applicant called to enquire about the position they were immediately offered interviews.
According to the Equal Employment Opportunities Commission, efforts have been made to resolve the matter of discrimination voluntarily. When this did not work the commission opted to file a lawsuit against the company.
As part of the lawsuit, the Commission is seeking an order that forces the company to enforce policies and procedures to eliminate this sort of discrimination, as well as an injunction with regards to any other type of discrimination by the firm. In addition to this, financial compensation is being sought for the female applicant against which the company is accused of discriminating.
