Attorney Fined For Repeated Baseless Cases
An attorney has been fined eight thousand dollars by a federal judge, and has been accused of repeatedly dragging baseless cases against Roman Catholic leaders to court, accusing them of covering up sexual abuse by priests.John A. Aretakis from New York was fined eight thousand dollars by US District Judge Paul A. Crotty. Crotty described the lawsuits repeatedly brought to court by Aretakis as ‘utterly baseless’. Claims were made that the actions of the church could be likened to racketeering, but judges determined that no racketeering laws were violated and each lawsuit was therefore thrown out.
Crotty issued a statement on a court related website last week, and this stated: 'No reasonable attorney would have believed these claims were warranted under existing law.' Aretakis is representing a number of abuse victims and is a known church critic.
Aretakis stated that by trying to protect priests, church officials had engaged in 'an organized, institutional, long-ranging criminal conspiracy'. He also spoke of Crotty’s decision, adding that Crotty could not be fair in this case because he was too closely involved with the church.
