AMC Entertainment Case Settled
The second largest chain of movie theaters in the nation, AMC Entertainment, has been ordered to arrange an upgrade in its seating for customers with wheelchairs. The company will have to arrange the upgrades at 1,200 of its auditoriums, following a US lawsuit. The company will also have to pay out $300,000 in damages and penalties as the result of the lawsuit.The lawsuit against the entertainment company was filed in 1999, and alleged that the Americans with Disabilities Act was being violated by the company because of its failure to provide acceptable seating for customers that have to use wheelchairs. The stipulations that have now been set out by the Los Angeles judge will also need to be incorporated into any new theaters built over the next five years.
It appears that all of the wheelchair seating in the stadiums is towards the front of each auditorium, and this forces those sitting their to have to crane their necks in order to get a good view of the screen to watch the movie. The company will also have to provide ramps for wheelchairs in many of its theaters in order to allow patrons to benefit from the new seating.
Assistant Attorney General Wan J. Kim stated: "Providing the same movie going experience for individuals in wheelchairs that other patrons enjoy delivers on the promise of the ADA. These improvements will make the goals of the ADA a reality for thousands of Americans who want to enjoy this popular form of entertainment."
