Singer Urges Lawmakers To Ban Copycat Groups
Mary Wilson, one of the original singers from the hit band The Supremes, is urging lawmakers to pass bills that will stop other copycat groups from performing as original artists. Wilson wants a ban imposed and wants it to become federal law to stop groups from impersonating and passing themselves off as originals.In her argument, Wilson told a House Committee: "They've crossed the line between imitation and flattery to becoming almost like identity theft." The committee in Illinois endorsed a bill, but it has to be submitted to the House for a full vote. Similar laws to this have already been passed in South Carolina and North Dakota.
Wilson added that over the years she has filed a number of civil lawsuits against copycat groups passing themselves off as The Supremes, in which Diana Ross was also a singer. However, due to the lack of legal protection and back up through lack of laws, the singer said that she had no luck with any of the cases.
Wilson was visiting Illinois in order to put forward her argument to lawmakers, and plans to make this part of a national campaign in order to do the same in states all over the country.
