Parents File Lawsuit Over Son’s Prison Suicide
The parents of a former prisoner who committed suicide in prison have filed a lawsuit claiming that he should have been on constant suicide watch because of his past history of suicide attempts, his paranoia and delusions. Nicholas Organek hung himself with his own shoelaces, although he was being checked on every thirty minutes according to officials.The lawsuit was filed in federal court in January of this year, and also claims that Organek should have been properly treated for his problems, which included paranoia, delusions, and methadone withdrawal symptoms.
According to the lawsuit the staff at the prison were not adequately trained to look after a prisoner that was at constant risk of committing suicide, and the lawsuit stated: "The failure to train had resulted in death and injury to other inmates in MCCI facilities."
David A. Schwartz, the Organeks' attorney, stated: "A pretrial detainee is entitled to be protected by those who hold him in custody, and the jail should not be judge, jury and executioner. The institution is obligated to do better."
