Federal Lawsuit Means Less Waiting Through Medicaid
A settlement reached as part of a federal lawsuit means that mentally retarded people will be able to enjoy independent living far more quickly through Medicaid. Up to 1,500 people may be able to move on to such a program following the lawsuit settlement. The program would help with everyday tasks such as cleaning, dressing, and bathing. The program is called Supports for Community Living. Around another 1,000 people will remain on the waiting list, but the wait should be far shorter than it would have been before the settlement.One 30-old-woman who was one of the first three to sue Medicaid over excessive waiting times to get help. She said: “We need services. We need all the help we can get.” After the initial filing the lawsuit was changed to represent thousands of Kentucky people as a class action.
Lawyers for the plaintiffs stated that the settlement will go a long way towards helping those with mental issues to get the assistance they need with speed and efficiency. They stated that many of these people are living with often elderly relations, but the program will enable them to enjoy more independence with the support they need.
The grandfather of one of the plaintiffs stated that he was very pleased with the outcome. He said: “I think we’ve gained more here than in the 30 years I’ve been an advocate. All we’ve got to do is make it work and keep it going.”
