Police Being Sued Over Shooting Of Pet Dog
A lawsuit has been filed against the Piscataway Township Police Department and one of its officers after an officer shot dead a pet dog at the scene of what he thought was a burglary, when a house alarm went off by mistake. The incident occurred in December 2005.Officer Fred Bell attended the scene after the alarm company contacted police to state that the property alarm was going off. He was unaware, however, that the son of the property owner had gone there to drop off some food and had accidentally left the door ajar. The son had taken his pet dog, eight year-old Maxie – a golden Labrador – with him.
When Officer Bell arrived at the scene he began to question the owner’s son, Mr. Colbath, and the dog jumped from the car where she was waiting and growled at the officer. He turned and shot the dog through the eye according to reports, stating that ‘he didn’t want to get bit’.
The family is now suing the department for five million dollars, after having to hold their dog while she died, and having to get officers to shoot her once again through the heart in order to put her out of her misery.
