Pacific Gas And Electric To Settle Series Of Lawsuits
A series of lawsuits relating to water contamination are to be settled by the Pacific Gas and Electric Co. The issue relates to contamination of waters in three California counties, and the company has agreed to pay out $295 million by way of settlement for the lawsuits. The lawsuits and settlement will affect around 1,100 people from the counties of Kings, Riverside and San Bernardino.A spokesperson for PG&E stated that up to 150 people have yet to settle. The claims and lawsuits in this case are similar to those depicted in the movie, Erin Brokovich, which was based on true events and echoed the current lawsuits against PG&E.
Some of the lawsuits for which the settlement has been offered were filed around a decade ago, and some of the lawyers involved in this case were also involved in the similar case depicted in Erin Brokovich.
PG&E have admitted that some of its officials knew about the contamination in the waters and that nothing was done to inform management or the counties affected. The company issued a statement: "Clearly, this situation should never have happened, and we are sorry that it did. It is not the way we do business, and we believe it would not happen in our company today."
