Hospital Found Guilty Of Negligence
A hospital has been found guilty of negligence by a jury, after a woman was left with nerve damage and forced to take daily medication following surgical procedures. Forty-one year-old Lisa Parise had a number of operations at the West Islip Good Samaritan Hospital Medical Center in order to attempt to remove an infection out of her left arm – an infection that could have proven deadly.The court concluded that the physician’s assistance that treated Parise at the hospital "departed from good and accepted medical practice". With regards to the assistant, Parise stated: "I felt she didn't spend enough time with me". According to reports the physician’s assistant did not bear in mind the infection that the patient was suffering from, did not order blood work, and did not consult with emergency room staff, among other things.
Left with scarring as well as constant pain, Parise has been awarded nearly three million dollars in compensation by the jury. Speaking about the plaintiff, her lawyer stated: "She's a lovely woman. She just wanted to prove that this happened to her, and doesn't want it to happen to anyone else."
Before the treatment Parise was a keen sports enthusiast and was very active, but states that she now has to avoid crowded environments and strenuous activity because of the pain and the risk of further injury.
