Family Plans To Sue Holiday Company
A parent is planning to sue holiday company Thomas Cook in the UK after her twelve year-old daughter contracted a severe illness while on vacation, which could result in her having to have a kidney transplant. The family stayed at the Atlantis Belek Hotel in Turkey in the Summer of 2006, when she contracted severe sickness and diarrhea. Medics have since stated that she is likely to require a transplant.Twelve year-old Katherine Reilly, from Bedfordshire in the UK, and her mother and brother all suffered from the sickness and diarrhea after they stayed at the hotel. This was blamed on undercooked food and unhygienic practices at the hotel such as an animal in the restaurant and insects around the food. Katherine was taken to a hospital when she did not improve after being home for four days. After being referred to another hospital medics stated that the sickness and diarrhea had led to haemolytic ureamic syndrome, leading to renal failure. The family was then told that the twelve year-old would probably need a kidney transplant. She is also likely to need medication for the rest of her life so that her body does not reject the kidney.
Her mother, who works as a nurse, stated: "I cannot believe that our dream holiday has resulted in what I can only describe as the worst horror story imaginable. My little girl was perfectly healthy prior to going to the Atlantis Belek and now she is facing the possibility of a transplant operation and thereafter years of ongoing treatment. No one should have to go through something like this, let alone a child."
