Man Sues Over Nickname At Work
A Brownsville company is being sued by an East Indian man after he claimed that he was called ‘Ghandi’ at work by colleagues and supervisors. The man claims he was teased with the nickname while working at the company. He also claims that he was discriminated against by the company refusing to rehire him after he was sent to prison over a custody battle with his ex-wife.Forty-eight year old Robert Thomas was in jail for four months after he refused to sign passports for his daughters when his ex-wife decided she wanted to take them to India. Thomas stated that a leave of absence would have kept his job open but he was refused this. He further claims that he was refused his job back upon re-application despite having the relevant qualifications and a history with Trico Products.
The man is filing his lawsuit against Trico Products, as well as two supervisors and two parent companies. As part of the lawsuit he claims that he was the only person of his particular ethnicity at his place of work, and that he was continually harassed and teased because of his race.
“They would always say, ‘Hey Gandhi’ or ‘Give Gandhi’ the work,” Thomas said. “Gandhi is one of the greatest men in India, and we all worship him. He sacrificed his life for his country, and they’re taking that away.”
