Thousands In Compensation For Wrongly Imprisoned Fire Fighter
A fire fighter from the West Midlands in the UK has won thousands of pounds in compensation from the local Police Authority after he was wrongfully arrested and subsequently imprisoned while taking his son to the local branch of McDonalds. The fire fighter won fifteen thousand pounds (around thirty thousand dollars) from the Police Authority, after he claimed he was assaulted before being wrongfully imprisoned.The incident occurred in 2004, when thirty-seven year-old John James was in the local McDonalds restaurant in Oldbury. The fire fighter, who works for Gloucestershire Fire Service, had taken his son, aged six, to the fast food restaurant. While in the eatery he was approached by officers and accused of drug dealing, before being taken to the police station under force.
Both the manager of the restaurant and a friend who was also in the eatery told police that the man had not been dealing drugs, but the information was ignored. According to reports, one police officer started issuing threats before becoming physically abusive with the fire fighter.
Mr. Janes stated: "I couldn't believe the treatment I received. The police officers were informed a black man was selling drugs from a blue car in the car park of the McDonalds; I was in the queue waiting to be served standing with my son when I was approached by the policeman intent on arresting me. I have many friends in the police service and none would have treated me in this way. I had done nothing wrong and was crying at the time from the pain from the handcuffs digging into my wrist".
