Inmates’ Appeals To Be Heard By Supreme Court
It was revealed earlier this week that the Supreme Court is to clarify when inmates can file civil rights lawsuit in relation to prison conditions. Three Michigan inmates are to have their cases reviewed by judges after their lawsuits were previously dismissed due to administrative discrepancies. Lower courts originally dismissed the cases because of a variety of reasons all relating to the inmates failing to follow the required grievance procedure.The three inmates whose cases are being reviewed had filed lawsuits for various reasons relating to the way they had been treated in prison. However, the dismissal of their cases hinged on aspects such as failing to complete the administrative forms and procedures correctly, and in some cases failure to name all the prison officers that were being sued as defendants.
The inmates, Mr. Jones, Mr. Williams, and Mr. Walton, all claim to
have been unfairly treated in prison, hence their decision to file lawsuits against the authorities and against specific prison staff.
Jones claims to have been forced to undertake physical labor after sustaining back injuries while in prison custody. Walton claims racial discrimination after receiving a more severe punishment than another inmate for the same act. Williams claims that he was not allowed to have surgery on his arm and hand in order to have tumors removed.
