Airline Issues Subpoena To Google
Google has been asked to reveal the identity of someone that posted a copyrighted video on the video website. The demand has been made by American Airlines, and the video in question was titled ‘Flight Attendant Upside Down’. The subpoena demands all documentation relating to the person posting the video.American Airlines has alleged that the material was taken from a training video and is copyrighted. Many web companies promise to protect user identity in such disputes but many others will not do so. Experts state that if it turns out that the material is copyrighted then Google may be forced to reveal the person’s identity. One official stated: “Hosts like Google won't be able to protect your anonymity, and in many instances won't be interested in it.”
American Airlines has been asked to file its request for the identity of the person through the courts by Google officials. Compliance officials from Google have also confirmed that they have contacted the person in question with details of the airline’s request.
Another company that seems to have been subpoenaed by the airline is the video sharing site YouTube. The company’s policy states: “We may release personally identifiable information and/or non-personally identifiable information if required to do so by law, or in the good-faith belief that such action is necessary to comply with state and federal laws or respond to a court order, subpoena or search warrant.”
