Forty-Five Thousand Dollar Settlement For Homeless Men
Three homeless men have been awarded forty-five thousand dollars in a settlement from the city after they were arrested in Las Vegas last year. The three men were mistakenly arrested in Vegas and charged with sleeping too close to a pile of feces.The three men then went on to file a violation of civil rights lawsuit, and each of the defendants - Eastman Webber, David Hicks and Jerry Halfpap – was awarded a settlement. They received a total of forty five thousand dollars, but their lawsuit had been seeking two million dollars each.
The men claim that only one of them was asleep at the time of the arrest, and that they were handcuffed in front of many onlookers. Gary Peck, executive director of the ACLU of Nevada said: "They were arrested, taken off to jail, for 'sleeping too close to poop'. Their rights were violated - violated in a rather egregious fashion."
The men's attorney E. Brent Bryson said: "The realities are that these individuals are not capable of maintaining and sustaining an ongoing litigation. This quick money to them represents an ability for them to get back on their feet."
