Police Department Settles Lawsuit
A lawsuit that was filed against the township police department by the American Civil Liberties Union of New Jersey has been settled for two hundred and seventy five thousand dollars. According to the lawsuit the police department harassed three black youths because of their race. The money from the settlement will go towards compensating the three youths and payment of legal fees.Each of the three youths in the incident will receive sixty two thousand dollars according to reports, and the remainder of the settlement will be used to settle legal fees from the ACLU. Court records indicate that the parents of the three boys were happy with the settlement.
The lawsuit was filed over two years ago and the boys in question were Sean Anderson, then 12, of Jersey City, Diamond Yorker, then 17, of Manalapan and Randy Reina, then 18, of Edison.
According to the lawsuit the three black youths were singled out from their white friends who they were with by police officers. They began to search and question the black youths, telling the white boys ‘you don’t need to see this’ and sending them home, according to the reports.
