Former Police Officers Being Sued By Los Angeles Police Department
It has been revealed that the Los Angeles Police Department is suing 53 of its former officers for leaving the force too early thus breaking their employment contracts. The LAPD alleges that the former officers broke their contracts by leaving within 5 years of graduating from the Police Academy, and the force is suing the officer for a total of over $1.5 million.Many of the officers named as defendants have sought legal advice and counsel stating that federal and state labor laws mean that the department cannot recover the cost of training.
It was in 1996 that the LAPD brought in the rule that employees graduating from the Police Academy had to sign a 5 year contract, as it was found that many were leaving right after graduation to work for other forces where free training was not offered.
City officials are arguing that the reason they are trying to recoup the cost of training, which comes to around $60,000 per officer, is to protect taxpayers’ investments. One official stated: "We think it's important that the city gets paid. But we don't want to create a financial burden for officers. We are very aware that people don't always have that kind of money sitting around."
