Men File Lawsuit Over Alleged Sexual Abuse
Eight more men have filed lawsuits claiming they were sexually abused at a Catholic home for boys from troubled or impoverished homes in the 1950s and 1960s. The lawsuit relates to the Madonna Manor in Marrero, where the men allege that they were beaten and molested at the hands of staff such as priests and nuns.Six lawsuits were filed just before Hurricane Katrina and allegations are being investigated. The Rev. William Maestri, the archdiocesan spokesman, stated: “We take these seriously. Once again the archdiocese is in a position of delicate balance, between being responsive to the allegations with all the seriousness they deserve, while at the same time wanting to be ever mindful of the reputations of those who are named in the allegations.”
He also stated that trying to look into the allegations was not easy because of the time that had lapsed between the alleged abuse and the actual lawsuits. He said that on some of the lawsuits the details were very sparse, with some lawsuits naming staff members that were not even on record.
Allegations include one man that says his head was split open with a flashlight and others that claim that they were closely inspected by nuns when they came out of the showers. In other lawsuits the plaintiffs have been unable to name their abusers.
