Cleaning Company Sued Over Beatles Photos
A cleaning company is being sued after a cleaner threw out some boxes of items that were apparently clearly marked as not being rubbish – and turned out to be photographic material – including rare photographs – of the hit 1960s band, the Beatles. The lawsuit was filed in the High Court in Britain.The lawsuit is being filed by Apple Corps Ltd and EMI Records, and the defendant is the cleaning company for which the cleaner worked, Crystal Services Plc. The plaintiffs claim that the boxes that were thrown out by the cleaner were clearly marked as not being garbage. Around four hundred and fifty photographs and negatives were lost as a result of the incident according to the lawsuit.
Although there are some items from the boxes that are replaceable, the plaintiffs state that others cannot be replaced, including rare photos from a particular Beatles session. The lawsuit claimed that some of the photos in the boxes that were thrown away were "the only remaining original material from the photography from this session, and were historically important and valuable."
The lawsuit goes on to state: "The cleaner removed the photographic material and disposed of it by placing it for compaction in a waste compactor and collection by refuse collectors. The compacted waste was removed by refuse collectors, and despite EMI's best efforts, the photographic material was irretrievably lost."
