Gay Couples Fight Over Marriage Laws
Eight gay couples have been fighting over what they claim to be unfair marriage laws in the state of Connecticut. A lawyer for all eight couples attended court on Tuesday and argued that the laws in the state relating to gay marriage were creating a class separation for gays simply based on their sexual preferences.The eight couples sued in 2004 in a bid to turn around the ban enforced by the state on gay marriages. This was done with the help of gay and lesbian advocacy group, Gay and Lesbian Advocates and Defenders.
Although the state approved civil unions between gay couples last year, the definition of actual marriage was still given as one between a man and a woman. A senior attorney for the gay and lesbian advocacy group stated that this was simply re-iterating that the state thought of gays and lesbians as second class citizens.
The Assistant Attorney General for the state, Jane Rosenberg, has argued that they have no fundamental right to marry, and that the approval of civil unions is a reasonable step to give gays and lesbians rights to unionship.
