Health Service Negligent In Death Of Mother
A coroner has stated that the UK’s National Health Service was negligent in a case involving the death of a mother. The woman, a mother of four, died after speaking to three different medics, each of whom diagnosed her incorrectly. She was mis-diagnosed twice at the Northern General Hospital and once by a nurse that was working from home and diagnosed her over the phone. A day after the final mis-diagnosis she died.Alison Christian from Sheffield in the UK was just thirty-six years of age when she attended the hospital with abdominal pains. After being examined she was told that she had a chest infection. However, when her symptoms continued to get worse she went back and was seen by a junior doctor who did not examine her or carry out any investigation.
Her husband then phoned the NHS helpline, and spoke to a nurse who was working from home. His wife was in so much pain she had to be carried to the phone to speak to the nurse. She was told, however, to take laxatives because it sounded as though she had constipation. A day later, Mrs. Christian died from a ruptured ulcer.
A lawyer for the family of Mrs. Christian stated: "There was obviously a mistake in the way that medical software was being used. The nurse was typing in information which was leading her to the wrong answers and the missed diagnosis. It is important that the person talking to the patient should respond to the patient's symptoms and needs, and not rely wholly on what they see in front of them on the computer screen."
He added: "Regarding the junior doctor in A&E, the implication is that detailed supervision was necessary. The junior doctor should not have left Mrs. Christian with unexplained symptoms and should have examined her thoroughly. I believe if these basic principles had been followed then Mrs. Christian would still be alive today."
