Hefty Fine For Health Service
The UK’s National Health Service has been fined seven and a half thousand pounds (about fifteen thousand dollars) after an elderly visitor to the hospital fell and died as a result of his injuries. Officials are concerned that hospitals may not be ensuring safety for both patients and visitors. The eighty-eight year-old man fell when visiting the Springfield University Hospital in London.William Durrant had been visiting his daughter in the hospital in December 2005 when the incident occurred. When he fell he fractured his wrist and his hip, and a month later he died as a result of these injuries. The hospital and health trust were accused of breaching health and safety regulations and fined seven and a half thousand pounds at a London court.
An accident claims attorney stated: "All employers have a duty to safeguard the safety and well-being of people, both employees, residents and members of the public on their premises. The NHS is covered by the same duties of care as any other organisation."
He added: "We would call on the NHS to bring in the very safest and stringent guidelines given the amount of people visiting their premises and the very nature of their work. In that way money spent compensating the injured can be far more effectively aimed at the people being cared for."
