Battle Begins Over Teflon Coated Cookware
A $5 billion battle over Teflon coated cookware has started with around 16 lawyer representing over 70 clients due to meet later this month in Des Moines, Iowa. The lawsuits relate to the safety of the cookware, and this scheduled meeting signals the first round of battles over the cookware.Attorneys state that the first 16 lawsuits will be filed in federal courts across the United States. A panel of judges transferred the lawsuits to Iowa when they voted to consolidate the lawsuits.
The lawsuits involve plaintiffs from 13 states across the country, and will be seeking reimbursement for those that purchased the items as well as compensation for potential health problems that could arise from the use of the products.
It was alleged that the company that has been selling Teflon for over 50 years withheld information from consumers relating to a chemical that was used to make the products and could prove hazardous to health, although the company has stated that Teflon products are safe.
