British Columbia Ferry Services Hit With First Lawsuit
British Columbia Ferry Services Inc. has been hit with its first lawsuit following the sinking recently of the Queen of the North, after which the staff member on charge of health and safety resigned for ‘personal reasons’. The first lawsuit has been filed by a couple that were on the ferry.A lawyer filed a statement of claim on behalf of the couple, Alexander and Maria Kotais, who were both on the ill fated ferry, as they were moving from Kitmat on the North Coast to Nanaimo in British Columbia. The couple were carrying a range of valuables with them as part of the move, although their furniture and bulkier items had previously been moved.
The lawsuit has been filed with class action status, and so may include all the passengers that paid to be on the ferry. The lawyer stated that many passengers had shown signs of serious stress and trauma following he incident, and he said: "The claim will largely deal with the post-accident, post-trauma."
The vessel sank with all but two out of the 101 passengers being rescued, although two are still missing and presumed dead.
