Previously high school teams were limited to no more than 32 games by the commission. However, new regulations now place this limitation on individual players rather than just on teams, and this has upset many coaches throughout a number of states according to lawyers for the plaintiffs.
This new regulation has caused problems in instances where players have to play on two different teams where there is a shortage of players. The plaintiffs’ lawyer, Jim Dodrill, stated: “There are schools, even here in Putnam County, that don’t have enough players for two separate teams. Some players have to play for both teams.”
A bulletin was sent out by the commission stating that if players are injured through playing in too many games then coaches and schools could face lawsuits. A hearing has been scheduled for April in Putnam County, and the judge has prohibited any changes to rules until the hearing has taken place.
