Surgeon Being Sued By Parents Of Deceased Boy
A doctor who has been linked to a number of deaths in Australia is being sued by the parents of a three-year-old who died after surgery. The doctor, Jayant Patel, has already been linked with around 13 deaths, and the parents of the young boy are now suing him for wrongful death as well as for malpractice.It was on Valentine’s Day in 1999 when the three-year-old Ian McClellan died. This happened shortly after the doctor had performed surgery on him at Doernbecher Children’s Hospital. The hospital is a part of the Oregon Health and Science University.
In the mid 1980’s, the doctor was disciplined for negligence by New York health authorities. However, he was then taken on by Kaiser Permanante Northwest when he moved to Portland.
In the lawsuit, the parents of the boy have named Kaiser, Oregon Board of Medical Examiner, and the doctor as defendants, claiming that Kaiser failed to properly investigate the doctor’s background, and accusing Oregon of representing the doctor as being skilled in that type of surgical procedure.
