Man Wins Lawsuit Against Police After A Decade
A man has won his lawsuit against the police following a ten year battle, after he was injured because an officer thought he was a prowler. The man was awarded a total of six hundred thousand dollars – two hundred thousand for false imprisonment and an additional four hundred thousand for malicious prosecution.The man was shot and injured by a police officer in St. Andrew ten years ago, and was then held for two days and later charged by police. He had been taking a nap in a vehicle at the back of his workplace. The shooting took place in July 1997.
According to reports the man was shot by a retired police officer who lived next door to the work place. The ex-officer apparently thought that he was a prowler. Although he was taken to a hospital for treatment he was later accused of assault and detained.
The Supreme Court awarded the compensation after finding that he was detained and charged by police without any justification. After being charged with assault ten years ago he was freed by the courts, and then filed his lawsuit.
