County And City Agree To Settle Lawsuits
In a bid to settle two lawsuits, the City of San Jose is to pay Santa Clara County over $33 million. The lawsuits had been stopping a concert hall being built by the county and the development of North First Street by the city.The city had filed a lawsuit against the county, and the county had filed a countersuit against the city, but as part of the settlement both lawsuits will now be dropped. This marks the end of a complicated battle between the city and the county according to officials.
A spokesperson speaking on behalf of the Mayor of San Jose said that the city and the county had been battling over a wide range of issues for many years, and that the settlement was something of a breakthrough "in half a century of wrangling between the city and the county on any number of issues."
The Chairman of the Board of County Supervisors also issued a written statement, which read: "We are pleased to have resolved this range of complex issues. Now we can put these lawsuits behind us and move forward with providing basic public services to the people of Santa Clara County and the City of San Jose."
