Settlement Over Headstone Symbols
A recent settlement in relation to symbols on headstones has resulted in the Wiccan pentacle being added to the list of emblems that will be accepted in national cemeteries as well as on military headstones issues by the government for deceased soldiers. The Wiccan pentacle has been added to the list of ‘emblems of belief’ in Virginia, and is part of a settlement between the Department of Veteran Affairs and Wiccans.A Wiccan High priestess, who was a plaintiff in the lawsuit, said that around eleven families across the nation were waiting for these pentacles to be added to headstones. For those that have made requests for the pentacle to be added to headstones, the settlement states that this must be carried out within a fourteen day period.
The Wiccan High Priestess, Selena Fox, was pleased with the settlement, and stated: "I am glad this has ended in success in time to get markers for Memorial Day." The five points on the pentacle signify earth, air, fire, water, and spirit. A spokesperson from the Department of Veteran Affairs stated that the settlement means that further taxpayers money would be saved on litigation, and added that the courts costs would be paid by the agency.
Reverend Barry Lynn, director of Americans United for Separation of Church and State, which represented the Wiccans in the lawsuit, stated: "This settlement has forced the Bush Administration into acknowledging that there are no second class religions in America, including among our nation's veterans."
