School Districts Sue Over Alleged Racism
Two school districts are filing lawsuits over the break up of a suburban Chicago Athletic League, claiming racism caused many schools to pull out. The two districts that are suing are predominantly black and claim that racism has resulted in many schools breaking up the league and creating a mainly white league.The South Inter-conference Association was one of the state’s largest school leagues, and the lawsuit claims that the decision to split the league amounts to ‘white flight’ and creates ‘separate and segregated conferences’.
However, an attorney representing a number of schools that pulled out of the league has branded the accusation of racism as nonsense. He went on to say that the decision to pull out had been on the cards for a number of years and was actually based on a combination of school rivalry and geography.
Parents, students, and school boards of Thornton Township and Thornton Fractional filed the lawsuit, and one of the students involved stated: ”We are being deprived the opportunity to compete against other children and other different ethnicities.''
