Shot Basketball Player Sues University
A basketball player from Duquesne University has filed a lawsuit against the university following an incident where he and four other basketball players were shot after a dance. The incident occurred in September of last year, and the plaintiff, Stuard Baldonado, was one of five that were shot at, the others being Shawn James, Kojo Mensah, Aaron Jackson, and Sam Ashaolu. The latter was shot in the head twice.According to the lawsuit officials at the university failed to take action or provide adequate security at the dance, despite the fact that they were allegedly aware of criminal activity taking place. The lawsuit was filed at the Allegheny County Common Pleas Court.
According to the lawsuit two armed men were allowed into the dance by university security staff, despite being asked by one of the players whether the men would be frisked. The lawsuit goes on to state: "Rather than alerting the campus police who were present inside the ballroom…or taking other similar reasonable steps, the doorman simply responded that they would not be frisked."
Two men and two women are awaiting trial in relation to the incident, and all four have pleaded not guilty to charges. The plaintiff was shot in the arm during the incident, and according to reports the bullet only narrowly missed his spine.
