Spam Suspects Hit With Lawsuit
Suspects involved in the harvesting of email addresses, which were then used to send spam emails, have been hit with a billion dollar lawsuit by a Utah based technology company, which used a process whereby email addresses were publicized and special software used to track the IP addresses of those trying to harvest the publicized addresses.The technology company, Unspam, filed the lawsuit late last week in Washington, and has asked for a court order to make the various Internet Service providers identify those that have been trying to collect these email addresses for spamming purposes.
Although it is not illegal to collect email addresses it is a federal and state offense to send spam emails, and those people receiving such emails are allowed to seek civil damages under US laws.
Matthew Prince, Unspam Technologies' chief executive, stated: "This is a community of Internet users saying, 'We're sick and tired of this crap, and we want it to stop'. We've found that the internet addresses of those doing the harvesting is a much smaller universe than those who are actually sending the messages, and locating them may give us good indicators of who out there is at the top of these spam operations. "
