2008 Trial For Tyson Foods
A lawsuit filed against Tyson Foods over the hiring of illegal immigrants is set to go to trial in March 2008 according to reports. The lawsuit was filed in relation to the company hiring illegal immigrants in order to get cheap labor, and therefore forcing legal workers to miss out on the chance to earn a living. The lawsuit demands that the company pay damages to the legal workers.According to the lawsuit eight plants belonging to Tyson Foods have been hiring illegal immigrants for nearly ten years, starting in 1998. Tyson Foods is one of the world’s largest meat companies. A lawyer for Tyson Foods is set to file a motion challenging the case, after which a mediator will be appointed in order to attempt the reaching of a settlement.
Tyson's lead attorney, Tom Green of Washington, D.C. Green said: "My client is not inclined to participate in anything that would lead to a settlement." He also added that the lawsuit was all about "costing Tyson millions of dollars to be in a case we believe we ought not to be in."
There are between fifty and one hundred thousand legal workers now involved in the lawsuit against Tyson. However, Green stated that he did not believe that the suit should be a class action, adding: "I don't think we should be moving forward as a class action. Unlawful hiring is a very, very individual situation. The test the government sets up does not guarantee that every employee in your plant is a lawful, documented eligible worker."
