Biggest Fine Ever Imposed By CPSC
Child products manufacturing giant, Graco, has been hit with the biggest fine ever imposed by the CPSC (Consumer Products Safety Commission) following its failure to inform the commission about deaths and injuries relating to a number of its products over the years. The four million dollar fine was imposed in late March of this year, and was for ‘systematic violations’ by the company between 1991 and 2002.The CPSC stated that the company failed to report hazards, deaths, and injuries relating to their goods in a timely manner and sometimes did not inform the CPSC at all about these problems. The fine is linked to sixteen products sold under the brands of Century and Graco. Although recalls were placed on the products in question, some were still on the market as late as last year. The range of products under fire has been implicated in nearly one thousand injuries and deaths.
The CPSC actually has a ceiling limit on the amount that they can fine, and this stands at under two millions dollars. However, the multitude of violations involved in this case resulted in the ceiling limit being raised dramatically under these circumstances, and the CPSC was therefore able to impose the fine of four million dollars.
A spokesman for the CPSC stated, "Companies should realize the CPSC will take swift action against anyone who withholds safety information from the commission, especially if it involves serious injuries and death. The message for companies is that the quicker you report to the CPSC, the quicker we can work together to keep injuries low and consumers informed about dangerous products."
