One And A Half Million Awarded To Couple Over HRT
A couple has been awarded one and a half million dollars over HRT treatment that allegedly resulted in the woman contracting breast cancer. The lawsuit was filed against the pharmaceutical giant Wyeth, the manufacturer of the hormone replacement therapy Prempro, which has come under fire recently and is at the center of a number of lawsuits.The jury awarded one and a half million dollars to Mary Daniel and her husband Tom. Of the damages awarded, Mary received one million dollars and her husband received half a million. The award was made by a Philadelphia jury, who also found that Wyeth acted recklessly and with malice and reckless disregard.
Sixty year-old Mary Daniel is said to have developed breast cancer after taking the HRT drug according to the court reports. She was taking prempro every other day for around sixteen months, and this was to relieve hot flashes that she was experiencing. The HRT is a combination of estrogen and progestin.
After being diagnosed with cancer Mrs. Daniel had to undergo surgery and chemotherapy. A lawyer acting on the couples’ behalf stated: "Wyeth has known for decades that postmenopausal drugs cause breast cancer but the company deliberately failed to do studies to understand or quantify that risk. Wyeth protected their bottom dollar instead of protecting the patients."
