Greencastle Installs Signs To Help Against Traffic Violations
The borough of Greencastle has taken steps to improve a particular stretch and cut down on traffic violations after a string of accidents and tragedies in the area over the years. Six intersections along Baltimore Street have had signs added that are practically impossible to miss and could save many injuries and even lives. A number of pedestrians, including children, have been injured on the stretch in the past, and it is hoped that these measures will reduce or eliminate such accidents and injuries in the future.One councilman stated, "Prevention is the name of the game now. Traffic is heavier every day in Greencastle. We've had the problems and know they're there. We're looking at all options and trying to get what we can to help pedestrians." With regards to monitoring the places where the signs have been erected to monitor their success, he added, "It's just a matter of us patrolling these places at this point and watching more closely."
The signs have been made available through public funding, and have been used and found to be successful in other boroughs and areas. It is hoped that the eye-catching design and color will ensure that the signs are not missed, and that traffic violations and accidents are cut dramatically because of the presence of these signs. One official stated, "They're an eye-catcher. You can't miss them because they're in the center of the lane."
The council states that pedestrian safety has always been of concern and there is no particular incident that led them to bring in the signs.
