Sister Files Lawsuit Against Police For Shooting Of Brother
A wrongful death lawsuit has been filed against the Winnipeg Police Departments after the shooting of an aboriginal man by a police officer a couple of years ago. The family of the dead man, eighteen year-old Matthew Dumas, claim that his death has left a real void in the family, and that someone needs to be held accountable for the death. The lawsuit was filed on behalf of the family by the dead man’s sister, Jessica Paul, age twenty-eight.Dumas’ sister stated: "He was a human being who deserved to have his life that was taken from him in just a moment. Matthew was an innocent person who was just in the wrong place at the wrong time." The case is being supported by the Southern Chiefs' Organization. The Grand Chief ,Chris Henderson, stated: "The officers in question have the full backing of their employer, the Winnipeg Police Service, and their union. This family does not have the same level of support, so at the very least we're doing what we can politically, legally and financially to support Jessica's family in their quest for justice and accountability in this tragic death."
Dumas was shot in 2005 at close range by an officer from the Winnipeg Police Service, and the incident occurred while a robbery was being investigated. According to reports the officer that shot Dumas saw him approaching with a screwdriver in his hand. However, the man was not involved in the crime that was being investigated according to reports.
According to the lawsuit the officer "acted in a high-handed, arrogant and malicious manner in arresting Matthew Dumas and killing him." Although no comment relating to the lawsuit has been received from the Winnipeg Police Service, officials from the service now have a period of time in which to file a statement of defense.
