Officials Want To Hear About Safety Of Parking Garage
Spokane city officials have asked the owner of a parking garage located downtown to prove its safety. This comes after a woman died when her car plunged five stories after crashing through a safety barrier. Officials want a structural engineering analysis to show that the River Park Square parking garage meets with codes and regulations.Mayor Dennis Hession stated: "We need to be assured that the public interest is safeguarded. In our analysis of the city's jurisdiction in this incident, we determined our appropriate course of action was to require information on whether the garage continues to meet building standards."
A 62-year-old woman, Jo Ellen Savage, died after her car crashed through the safety barrier in April, and Hession was a witness to the accident. A spokesperson has now confirmed that an engineering firm has been hired to carry out the necessary inspections.
One attorney has filed a motion to get the parking garage closed until structural defects have been looked at, declaring it a public nuisance. The way the parking garage has been maintained and financed over the years has already resulted in many lawsuits in the past.
