Cops File Lawsuit Against Police Department
Two San Francisco police officers have filed a lawsuit against the police department, claiming that they are being discriminated against in their jobs as a result of being Army reservists. The lawsuit has been filed by Howard Zimmerman, 38, a major in the California Army National Guard, and William Carter, 53, a lieutenant colonel in the Army Reserve.According to reports the two officers were denied promotions on a number of occasions after they returned from Army duties in Iraq. The lawsuit has been filed in the US District Court in San Francisco. They have traveled to Iraq on Army duties twice.
An attorney for the police officers stated: "These guys are putting their lives on the line, whether as police officers or as military officers, and to hold against them the fact that they serve in the military is horribly unjust. This is an employment discrimination case."
However, the police chief has branded the accusations as false, stating: "We've always supported our officers serving in the armed forces. We have abided by the rules we are supposed to abide by and that's why it's really surprising to receive (the lawsuit). We do the best to work things out with individuals we do have in the military, but I guess it's really in the eye of the beholder."
