Chicken Farm Being Sued For Health Problems
A woman who claims that her chronic health problems are the result of the effects of a nearby chicken farm is suing the farm. Thought to be the first lawsuit of its kind in the state of South Carolina, this is one in a line of issues that have arisen between poultry farmers and those living near to the farms who claim that the farms are responsible for their ill health and other problems.The woman, Carmen Covington, claims that her family had made complaints to the health department for a number of years. After developing a persistent cough and a red rash on her hands, she decided to file her lawsuit against the farm. Her lawsuit alleges that her health problems result from toxic pollutants from the chicken house that have become airborne.
A spokesman for the Farm Bureau stated: "We have more than 30,000 family farmers in South Carolina. And I don't know of a single case where any of them has become unhealthy because of air quality around their farms."
Another nearby resident with health problems stated: "At times, the smell can be unbearable. I wonder sometimes if it hasn't induced my conditions. The farm is too close if you can smell it."
