Class Action Lawsuit Filed Against Yahoo
A class action lawsuit has been filed against Yahoo by an anti-spyware activist and lawyer. Ben Edelman is a lawyer in the state of Massachusetts, and is also a spyware researcher. The lawsuit has been filed on behalf of a number of companies, and alleges that Yahoo placed the companies’ advertisements on spyware-vendor and low rate sites.The lawsuit was filed in the US District Court in New Jersey, and it alleges that Yahoo charged high rates with a promise of placing the ads on premium sites, but then went on to place them on spyware-vendor sites and URL web pages. The purpose of the lawsuit is to recover the costs paid out by advertisers to Yahoo.
It is thought that if the class action lawsuit is successful it could mean a payout of millions of dollars for the advertisers from Yahoo. Describing spyware, Edelman stated: "It's software that at least sometimes gets on your computer without your permission. It tracks where you go online." With regards to the expected payout, he added: "It seems like there's a lot of money at issue."
