The award has been made to Karen Moe Humphreys who worked at the university as a swimming coach and administrator between 1978 and 2004. She claims that she made a complaint about how women were being treated by the university's athletic department, and stated that as a result of this complaint she was dismissed.
The UC Board of Regents has stated that as part of the settlement the former coach and administrator will be reinstated by the university, and will then retire next year when she will have reached thirty years with the university.
Humphreys was an Olympic gold medal swimmer before being taken on by the university, and in 1972 won the gold medal in the 200 meter butterfly in the Munich summer Olympics.
