Pregnant Employees Rights Affected In The UK
A recent report has revealed that a staggering 30,000 UK women are ‘forced’ to leave employment every year due to pregnancy. The research suggests that there is a great deal of discrimination against working women that become pregnant, and that tens of thousands are forced out by way of dismissal, redundancy, and even constructive dismissal.The results of the study have been described by officials as ‘shocking’. The survey was performed by the Equal Opportunities Commission, and the agency is now asking for the government’s help in addressing this employment discrimination problem as soon as possible.
"Although some employers knowingly ignore the law, many businesses do face genuine challenges in managing pregnancy and simply don't know what their responsibilities are or what help is available to them," said Julie Mellor, chair of the Equal Opportunities Commission.
One employee of a software firm told of her experience of this type of discrimination. She stated, "I had been passing on e-mails to my partner about being excited about being pregnant and doing a test to confirm what we already knew. We then had four days off together to celebrate. On coming back to the office that morning, I was immediately informed I was unneeded. My boss said he had been thinking about it for the last 18 months, but he had no paperwork to back himself up at all. I was to work for three months to finish a project and then go."
