Humane Society Drops Lawsuit Against Federal Fisheries Minister
The US Humane Society has reported that it is going to drop its lawsuit against the federal fisheries minister. The society had filed a libel lawsuit against the federal fisheries minister in relation to comments he made about observers of the seal hunt.An apology was issued earlier this week by Loyola Hearn who made a statement apologizing for indicating that observers of the seal hunt had had criminal charges brought against them.
Officials from the Humane Society were not convinced that the apology was as extensive as they had hoped it would be, but nevertheless did accept the statement as a form of apology for making a false statement. One official from the Humane Society has confirmed that a lawsuit had been filed against the minister but has now been withdrawn.
The hunt, which was one of the most turbulent for some years, took place last month, with a number of society members being accused of violation of their observer permits for getting too close to a vessel, but not getting charged.
