Wrongful Death Lawsuit Settled
The mother of a sixteen-year -ld boy from Seattle has settled a wrongful death lawsuit against Seattle Public Schools. The sixteen-year-old was stabbed and beaten to death by two other students in 2003. It was also revealed during the investigation that a parent had actually informed a district employee several days before the incident that certain boys from the Roosevelt High football team were planning to kill the boy, and messages were left for the school principal by both the parent and the employee.Donna Jasmer, the mother of the deceased boy, was paid $250,000, reported her partner. In addition to the payout, the district is also looking at a revised and improved threat notification policy, on which the boy’s mother and her partner also had some input. With regards to the notification before John Jasmer, the schoolboy, was killed, the Vice Principal of the school claims that no messages were received.
Officials are now addressing this issue, and have acknowledged that the policy needs to be tightened. One official stated, "It's important to get the safety and security folks immediately in the loop. Our principals are well trained, but their primary focus is on academics." Officials also stated that any threat notifications received in the future will be immediately reported to the district security office.
Speaking about the new policy, another official stated, "Had this policy been followed, I'm confident there's a 99 percent chance John wouldn't have been murdered. The money was never the issue. It was about preventing this from happening again."
